What Kind Of Content Should You Create For Your New Website?

Breaking Down My Freebie, The Ultimate Checklist To Getting Your Website Started:

Let’s talk about something that is widely asked, “Is blogging dead?” In my opinion no, in Google’s opinion, absolutely not! I will say though that blogging has evolved.

What we used to see were just words on the screen and some affiliate links, but now we have graphics and videos to keep the reader interested. Reading isn’t your thing? No worries, a lot of blog posts are now coming from podcast episodes!

If you are about to create your website, consider having one or all of these things ready for your designer. Not only will it help the designer get more content for your website, but it gives you authority. Why is blogging important? It tells your reader that you have in fact been in this industry for as long as you say you have. I heard the other day, that if you have been in the industry for 10 years and only have 1 blog post, then why can’t you write about it? You are telling your audience that you know what you are talking about, but you’ll only give them a little peek into what you know.

Consider having content ready before the launch of your website, not just for your designer but to keep your reader on your website longer.

Now, heading back into the blog post...

Blogs or Videos

The first thing you have to ask yourself when creating the site is what kind of content you want to live on your site if any. Are you looking to create blog posts or videos? Before this question, I would actually ask yourself what is easier for you to create?

If you post over on Instagram and Facebook all the time, consider repurposing those posts to make them longer. Have you solely been focused on reels lately? That’s great! The same concept, pop the video up and copy the caption over to your blog post. Find what medium works for you then work with that. If creating a video and editing it sounds like the worst thing in the world to you here is your out, don’t do it!

(Seriously, tell people that Dominique said it was ok not to do it!)

You want your content creation to come easy to you and make sure that you are having fun while you are creating something!

Finally, I suggest that if you are going to DIY your site or send it to a designer and you want to blog, have a few ready to go. When I go to design a site and they only have one blog post ready I know that I’m going to have to come back later and restructure some pages once they have more posts ready to go.

A Great Way To Repurpose Your Content:

As mentioned before, blogging can be a great way to repurpose your content. From my blog posts, I can get almost two weeks' worth of content for all my platforms! These graphics you see, I create them into at least 5 different pins for Pinterest. I then repurpose this content for my email that I send every Friday. For Instagram, I create two graphic posts, an Instagram story, and reels. Sometimes I can create more reels around it but that is already three different times I show up on social media with one blog post that I created.

To be fully transparent I’ve been off my social media game for a while, but that’s just life!

If I am only posting about my blog once over on my Instagram, that’s fine but the chances that I will get as many eyes on it if I had posted three times that week is probably a lot less. If you only want to show up on your social media once a week then perfect, you have your post from the week! No need to go take a photo, just create a graphic in Canva with your branding. Keep it super simple if social media just isn’t your thing.

‘Let’s work smarter, not harder’

This goes with my previous point about repurposing your content, so if you need some more convincing read this paragraph, if not skip to the more logical reason for blogging.

It takes me a while to write a blog, edit it, post it, and create content around it. Honestly, I want to say it takes me about 4-5 hours out of my week. If I do it all in one day then it definitely takes up my whole work morning. I’m saying this so you realize that there is a ton of effort and time that goes into creating something, so why not share that content everywhere? If I’m putting that much time into something I want to make sure that people are reading it across all different platforms.

I will say that I’m getting faster at writing, but it really isn’t my first skill so it does take me a while to write blogs. When I think of the term, ‘work smarter, not harder,’ this example comes to my mind. If I decide not to use any of the content that I just wrote in my blog, then I’m working 10x harder to create something that is unique and original which would probably make my work day a lot longer!

Helps your SEO

Did you know that the more words that are on your site the more Google or other search engines can ‘crawl’ on your site to see if you have the answer to the question someone just typed in? The more I talk about website design in my blog posts the more times my site will pop up when someone types in specific keywords. It also shows the search engine that I know what I’m talking about because I talk about it so much on the website. It also helps because Google knows that the person who lands on my site will most likely stay there longer since I talk a lot about the question they’ve entered into the search engine.

As stated earlier, blogging or posting videos can help your SEO by answering the question that someone types into a search engine. I make sure to do some SEO research before writing my blog to see what people are looking for. I search for keywords over on Ubersuggest to help my website be targeted when someone types in a specific question that I’ve answered.

Keeps Your Site ‘Updated’ (in Google’s eyes):

By now I hope I have convinced you that if you are writing a blog or posting videos on your site that you should have more than one when you go to create your website. Now, the question might be, “how many blogs should you post a week?”

To answer that question, let me ask YOU a question, how much can you post a week? Do you feel like posting twice a week? Great! Can you only do it once a month? Not amazing, but not horrible either! The more you are posting on your website the more it looks ‘updated’ in Google’s eyes. If you create your site then never touch it again, it can work but the chances of you getting a lot of organic traffic through a search engine is slim. If you are looking to just have authority and create that ‘link in bio’ for your social media then maybe creating a whole website isn’t the smartest thing to do right now, especially if you are just starting your business and are watching your budget. If you have an established brand and need a space for your portfolio, services, etc. then having a website is beneficial even if you don’t plan to post anything on a regular basis.

Blogging and creating video content have their ups and downs, but the benefits of having it on your site depend on two things. One is your brand and if it works within your brand voice. Two being your time. If you don’t have time to write a blog once a week or even once every other week, or you don’t enjoy writing a blog then I recommend you don’t do it. Putting more pressure on yourself just isn’t worth it. If you do want to write a blog or create videos for your website then yay! Just make sure when your site is ready to go live that you have created a lot of content for it. Or launch it and just make sure the blog portion is being actively worked on
